I receive quite a few messages for quotes for fondant cakes, and a lot of the people asking for quotes do not go ahead with ordering a cake. Well, this post is dedicated to them. But before that, who wants to win a dozen cupcakes????

Back to cake making, In short, to produce a custom cake, it takes around 3-10 hours of work, depending on the skill of the baker/decorator, and the complexity of the cake. As a home baker, I have tried cake mixes, and they are good in case of emergency, and tasty too, however they are no way comparable with the made from scratch cakes. Sure, I buy the fondant, but looking at it's price, one day I might make that too.
It takes good kitchen appliances to mix & bake cakes. They are not free, neither is the electricity. And let's not forget that good cakes take time to bake. Some of them hours. Hours of time where you are stuck to the oven as on extra minute can turn a cake from great into a brick. The mixing and baking happens a few days ahead, and most of us freeze the cake base to keep/add moisture in, and to make it easy to fill, ice or carve.,
Some cakes have decorations that are added last on the cake. Some can be made ahead, but they do not make themselves, do they? Try modelling something out of clay and see how long it takes.
Then there is the filling and or icing. You need to rest cakes before you cover them in fondant. Then there is the fondant. I love white cakes because it takes the least time to prepare it.
But most people want coloured fondant, and sometimes it takes up to an hour to knead and colour fondant, to get to the right shade.
Then covering the cake, adding decorations and so on.
And despite all this lenghty process, we sometimes get a "nice" for a compliment for that cake.
Nevermind, despite the time, I love decorating cakes!!! Anyone want to order one ;)?
